Storm in Vietnam leads to bus being swept away and bridge collapsing, death toll rises to 59

Typhoon Yagi caused devastation in Vietnam, resulting in at least 59 deaths and significant damage to businesses and factories in the northern industrial hubs. The typhoon made landfall on Saturday, weakening to a tropical depression, but causing floods and landslides that led to more casualties. A bridge collapse and a bus being swept away by flooding were among the tragic incidents reported. The water levels of several rivers in northern Vietnam remained dangerously high, hampering rescue efforts.

The effects of the typhoon were felt in Phu Tho province where a bridge collapsed over the Red River, causing vehicles to fall into the river. Dozens of businesses in Haiphong province were also impacted, with factories suffering damage to roofs and equipment. The loss of electricity in Haiphong and Quang Ninh provinces left industrial hubs without power, disrupting production for many companies, including major exporters.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh approved a recovery package of $4.62 million for Haiphong to aid in the recovery efforts. However, ongoing downpours and the risk of floods and landslides persisted due to the weakened but lingering effects of the typhoon. Overall, the typhoon caused at least 21 deaths and 299 injuries in Vietnam, adding to the devastation it had already caused in the Philippines and southern China. Experts attribute the intensification of storms like Typhoon Yagi to climate change, warning of the increasing impact of extreme weather events in the future.
