Boulder Abortion Clinic in Colorado is one of five clinics in the US where women can access second- and third-trimester abortions. These procedures are typically rare and controversial, sparking fierce political debate. Former President Trump expressed discomfort with later-term abortions, suggesting they are radical and should be banned. However, only about 1% of abortions occur after 21 weeks, with the majority happening in the first trimester.
Dr. Warren Hern, who operates the clinic, has seen patients in desperate situations, including young victims of abuse, women facing fatal illnesses during pregnancy, and those with severe fetal anomalies. Some patients, like Emma and Stewart from Texas, sought abortions due to devastating diagnoses. They traveled to Colorado, where abortion restrictions are more lenient.
However, not all patients have the resources to travel for abortions. Willow, a young woman in Colorado, struggled to find a clinic willing to perform her abortion due to delays in care. The overturn of Roe v. Wade has made situations like Willow’s more dangerous and emotionally stressful, according to Dr. Hern. Since then, 14 states have enacted near-total abortion bans.
Despite the controversy and political debate surrounding second- and third-trimester abortions, Dr. Hern and his team at the Boulder Abortion Clinic provide essential health care services to women in need, ensuring that they have access to safe and compassionate care during challenging circumstances.
