Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will be meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. Trump praised Modi as “fantastic” but also criticized India as a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide further details about the meeting, and the Indian Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment. As president, Trump visited India in 2020 to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, with the U.S. being India’s second-largest trading partner after China. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23, where he will participate in the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Delaware and address the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Modi’s upcoming visit will be his first to the U.S. since winning a historic third term in June. During his state visit in 2023, the U.S. and India signed various technology and defense deals, leading to deeper cooperation between the two countries. Recently, the U.S. Department of State announced a partnership with the India Semiconductor Mission to improve the global semiconductor value chain, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the two nations in the field of technology. The announcement emphasized the potential benefits for both countries from expanding India’s semiconductor industry.
