Former Florida sheriff’s deputy Leslie Boileau was arrested for manslaughter after accidentally shooting his girlfriend at their home in Ocala. Boileau called 911 to report the incident, stating that they had been handling and dry-firing the firearms when the shooting occurred, resulting in the girlfriend being fatally shot in the head. Boileau explained that he accidentally discharged a loaded round while demonstrating the use of a rifle to his girlfriend after they returned home from dinner and began cleaning their guns.
A search warrant was executed and physical evidence found at the scene corroborated Boileau’s account, leading to his arrest for manslaughter. Boileau had been a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office for eight years but was terminated immediately after the shooting. The gun involved in the incident was not his work firearm. Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken called the shooting a tragic incident and offered condolences to the victim’s family.
Sheriff Billy Woods expressed his sympathy for the victim’s family and noted that while most law enforcement officers perform their duties commendably, the actions of one tragic incident can impact the entire law enforcement community. The Ocala Police Department’s investigation into the incident is ongoing, and Sheriff Woods assured them of his office’s support as they continue their work.
