A gas explosion in a coal mine in Iran’s South Khorasan Province resulted in the death of at least 51 people, with 20 others injured. The accident occurred in blocks B and C of the mine run by the Madanjoo company, which is a major coal provider for the country. Seventy-six percent of Iran’s coal is sourced from this region, with several large companies operating in the area.
Rescue operations in block B have been completed, with 30 workers dead and 17 injured. Efforts are now focused on block C, where methane gas levels are high, requiring 3-4 hours to complete the operation. Of the 69 workers in the blocks during the explosion, 17 were injured, while 24 remain missing.
The explosion happened at 9 p.m. on Saturday, prompting President Masoud Pezeshkian to offer condolences to the victims’ families. He assured that the government would make every effort to support those affected by the tragedy. The head of Iran’s Red Crescent reported that 17 injured individuals have been taken to the hospital, with search ongoing for the missing workers. The incident highlights the dangers faced by coal miners in Iran and the importance of ensuring workplace safety in the mining industry.
