Pressure Mounts on UK’s Starmer Over Economy as Labour Conference Kicks Off | Political News

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has assured the public that his Labour Party will not implement austerity measures and will protect public services ahead of the party’s annual conference in Liverpool. However, Starmer is facing a drop in popularity with only 24 percent of people approving of his job performance in a recent poll. He has also come under scrutiny for receiving numerous gifts and hospitality, worth over 100,000 pounds since December 2019.

Despite these challenges, Starmer remains committed to ensuring that public services are functioning properly and shielding working people from tax increases. The conference aims to boost morale within the party and highlight their achievements in the past 11 weeks, including ambitious homebuilding targets and investments in green energy.

However, the Unite union, with over one million members, has called on Starmer to reverse his decision to limit winter fuel payments for the elderly, which they describe as a “cruel policy.” The Conservative government, who Starmer blames for leaving behind a 22-billion-pound hole in public finances, denies this accusation.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has expressed optimism at the conference, emphasizing the need for change and growth. Foreign Secretary David Lammy also delivered a rousing speech, declaring that “Britain is back.” Despite the challenges and criticisms, Starmer is hopeful that his government’s actions will put Britain on the path to growth and success.
