Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to make her first visit to the southern border since announcing her 2024 campaign, with a focus on attacking former President Donald Trump’s handling of immigration and border security issues. Her campaign aims to highlight her earlier work on these issues and portray Trump as “dangerous” and divisive.
Harris will visit a border town in Arizona to discuss a bipartisan border security plan that she believes is the toughest in a generation. She will criticize Trump for pushing congressional Republicans to block a similar bipartisan bill earlier this year, which would have addressed key issues such as border closures, asylum standards, and funding for law enforcement.
Trump has made the border and immigration a key issue in his political messaging, using derogatory language to describe migrants and accusing Harris of being weak on the border. He has also spread lies about Haitian immigrants residing legally in Ohio.
Despite this, a recent poll shows that while more voters trust Trump on securing the border and controlling immigration, they believe Harris would be better at treating immigrants humanely and protecting their rights. Border apprehensions have decreased in recent months, with shelters on the border experiencing fewer migrants seeking shelter.
Harris’s visit to the border is part of her campaign strategy to distinguish herself from Trump and highlight her plans for immigration and border security if elected.
