Governor DeSantis rejects Vice President Harris’ attempts to reach him regarding Hurricane Helene

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been avoiding calls from Vice President Kamala Harris regarding storm recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. The DeSantis camp deemed the calls to be political in nature. DeSantis also missed a call from President Joe Biden due to scheduling conflicts, even though the Biden team had invited him to a storm damage survey event in north Florida. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the decision to not attend was up to DeSantis, and the Biden-Harris administration is fully engaged in hurricane response efforts with FEMA on the ground. DeSantis has been in direct contact with FEMA Director Deanne Criswell.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which hit Florida on Sept. 27, causing devastation in north Florida and flooding along the Gulf Coast, DeSantis expressed confidence in the state’s ability to handle the cleanup. He also sent resources to assist in North Carolina, which was impacted by the storm’s remnants. As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, DeSantis is preparing for its potential landfall midweek.

Former President Donald Trump has also been involved in hurricane response efforts, visiting Georgia and launching a fundraising initiative for relief organizations. Trump has criticized Harris and shared misinformation about storm response efforts on social media. As the state braces for Hurricane Milton, there has been no reported contact between Biden and DeSantis regarding the upcoming storm.
