US President Joe Biden has decided to postpone his planned trip to Germany and Angola in order to monitor Hurricane Milton as it approaches Florida. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the change was necessary due to the projected trajectory and strength of the storm. It remains unclear when or if the trip will be rescheduled.
Biden was scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin, as well as host a summit on the war in Ukraine at the US Ramstein airbase. The President had also planned to visit Angola as part of his promise to travel to Africa during his term in office.
Hurricane Milton is a powerful storm that is currently heading toward Florida. While it weakened slightly on Tuesday, it still poses a significant threat, with the potential for a direct hit on the Tampa Bay region. Concerns have also been raised about the storm potentially causing further damage using debris from the recent Hurricane Helene.
With projections indicating that Hurricane Milton will remain strong as it moves past Florida, parts of the eastern seaboard have been placed under hurricane warnings. The decision for President Biden to remain in Washington, DC to monitor the storm reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need for close monitoring of its potential impact.
