Iran believes that the killing of Yahya Sinwar will enhance the ‘spirit of resistance’; US advocates for a Gaza ceasefire amidst the Middle East crisis – Live updates on Israel-Gaza conflict.

The Iranian mission to the UN stated that Yahya Sinwar’s death will strengthen the “spirit of resistance,” emphasizing that his open fighting and not hiding in a bunker will inspire future generations. Sinwar, a Hamas leader, was apparently killed while fighting Israeli forces in Rafah. Meanwhile, Israel has posted drone footage of Sinwar in a ruined apartment, lost part of his arm, wearing a keffiyeh, and battle fatigues, as he throws an object at a drone. Israel is holding a meeting to discuss the impact of Sinwar’s death on negotiations for releasing hostages held captive in Gaza.

The US is pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaking to key diplomats, including the Qatari Prime Minister. President Biden has urged Israel to make progress towards a ceasefire following Sinwar’s death. While Israel is expanding its military assault in Gaza, pointing to the killing of a Hezbollah commander in Lebanon, tensions in the region continue to escalate.

As reactions pour in about Sinwar’s death, Palestinians and intellectuals have noted that resistance against Israeli aggression is deeply rooted and cannot be quelled by targeted assassinations of leaders. With new leaders emerging to take their place, the spirit of Palestinian resistance remains strong. International human rights organizations and journalists have raised concerns about the impact of conflict on civilians, including the targeting of schools and hospitals and the plight of journalists injured in the line of duty.
