John O’Keefe’s Family Continues Fight for Justice Following Karen Read’s Mistrial

Karen Read is facing a retrial after her murder trial ended with a hung jury earlier this year. The family of the victim, John O’Keefe, fully supports this decision. O’Keefe was found dead outside the home of a retired Boston police sergeant in January 2022. Read, who was dating O’Keefe at the time, was charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a fatal collision. Prosecutors allege that Read backed her Lexus into O’Keefe, leaving him for dead outside the home.

Read has maintained her innocence, claiming that law enforcement officers framed her in the killing. This claim is supported by her defense team, who argue that Read dropped off O’Keefe at a party and saw him enter the home where a tension-filled encounter resulted in his injuries. Multiple individuals implicated by the defense have denied involvement in O’Keefe’s death.

The case has been marred by allegations of bias and improper investigation by a Massachusetts State Trooper, Michael Proctor, who used derogatory language about Read in private texts. The defense theories surrounding the case have been amplified by a local blogger, Aiden Kearney, who has faced charges of witness intimidation and conspiracy in connection with his online media coverage of the case.

Despite the family’s hope to move on, they face the prospect of another trial in the pursuit of justice for O’Keefe. Read’s retrial is scheduled to begin in January.
