Turkish radio station rejects claims of license cancellation due to mention of ‘Armenian genocide’

Açık Radyo (Open Radio), one of the oldest radio channels in Turkey, recently faced the cancellation of its terrestrial broadcasting license by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK). The founder of the station, Ömer Madra, clarified that the license was revoked not directly due to using the phrase “Armenian genocide” on air, but rather because they failed to suspend broadcasts on specific dates as ordered by the regulator.

Madra highlighted that his team was not properly informed of the suspension dates, leading to the continued broadcasts. Despite appealing the fines imposed for the incident where the controversial phrase was used on air, the license was eventually canceled due to an electronic notification error regarding the suspension dates.

Open Radio, which began broadcasting in 1995, ceased its terrestrial broadcasts abruptly, leaving the team surprised as they arrived for work as usual. Madra expressed hope that the license cancellation may be temporarily suspended through legal avenues, allowing for a potential return to terrestrial broadcasting in the near future.

The phrase “Armenian genocide” was deemed to be taken out of context by Madra, who explained that the discussion involving the controversial term was part of a broader segment covering historical commemorations. Despite facing challenges from RTÜK, Madra expressed optimism about returning to broadcasting, either via terrestrial or digital platforms, within a week to 10 days. The station had made preparations for this transition as early as June, ensuring continuity in their dedication to providing a diverse range of content to listeners.
