A brush fire named the Keller Fire in Oakland, California, burned two homes and prompted evacuation orders on Friday. The fire started in a home on Mountain Avenue and spread to a grove of Eucalyptus trees, ultimately growing to 15 acres and being 50% contained as of Saturday morning. Fire Chief Damon Covington stated that while crews were able to stop the forward progress of the fire, there was still much work to be done. Two homes were impacted by the flames, with dozens of others threatened but not damaged. Evacuation orders were initially issued for Campus Drive and Crystal Ridge Court, expanding to surrounding areas. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao urged those being evacuated to leave immediately to protect the health of citizens. One resident, Delane Sims, shared that her home was damaged but expressed gratitude that her husband was able to escape when a window exploded due to the fire. The Oakland Fire Department and CalFire continued to work aggressively to fully extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
