The Defence Ministers of the G7 met in Naples, Italy and reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine amidst escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. The ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed their commitment to providing military assistance to Ukraine both in the short and long term. Italy’s Defence Minister highlighted the current security challenges including Russian aggression, instability in sub-Saharan Africa, and tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
The joint declaration also addressed Iran’s ballistic missiles and attacks against Israel, emphasizing the need for all parties to act in accordance with international law. The G7 ministers expressed concern for the security of UNIFIL peacekeepers in Lebanon and discussed security issues in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.
High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borell, and NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, also attended the meeting. The G7 ministers emphasized the importance of upholding international law and the protection of peacekeepers in conflict zones. Italy, which holds the rotating chairmanship of the G7 until 2024, played a key role in facilitating discussions on current security challenges and reaffirming the group’s unity in addressing global threats.
