Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Istanbul to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East and defense industry cooperation. During the talks, Scholz stated that Germany will support Turkey regarding the consequences of the war in Syria and expressed a desire for progress between Turkey and the EU. Turkey has been a key player in dealing with the influx of refugees from the Syrian civil war, with over 3.2 million registered in the country and many more unregistered. In recent times, the Turkish government has deported more than 50,000 Syrian refugees back to Syria due to domestic tensions and economic impacts. Despite these challenges, Erdogan announced that Turkey’s doors remain open to refugees from Lebanon following Israel’s recent offensive in the region. Erdogan emphasized the importance of assisting those fleeing conflict and stated that Turkey will continue to support those seeking refuge during times of war. The meeting between Erdogan and Scholz highlighted Turkey’s ongoing commitment to helping refugees in the region and the need for international cooperation in addressing the humanitarian crisis.
