Defected Lukashenko Guard Joins Front Line in Ukraine to Topple Belarus Tyrant

Former Belarusian police officer Viachaslau Hranouski made a life-changing decision to leave his job and country after witnessing the violent crackdown on protesters by the regime of dictator Alexander Lukashenko. Seeing the brutality of his former colleagues during the 2020 protests, Hranouski realized that he no longer wanted to be a part of the repressive regime and its actions.

After resigning from the police force, Hranouski fled to Ukraine and joined the Ukrainian army to fight against Russia, which he now views as the best way to combat both Putin and Lukashenko, who he sees as allies. Hranouski’s decision to join the KastuĊ› KalinoĊski regiment, made up of Belarusians fighting alongside Ukraine, has put him on the frontline of the conflict, where he has experienced loss and witnessed the brutality of war.

Facing criminal charges in Belarus for his involvement with the regiment, Hranouski reflects on how blind obedience and lack of critical thinking among his former colleagues allowed for the regime to perpetuate violence and corruption. He has severed ties with most of his former friends, who still support the Lukashenko regime, and remains focused on the mission of fighting for a free Belarus.

Despite facing personal risks and challenges, Hranouski remains committed to the belief that the liberation of Ukraine could lead to the downfall of both Putin and Lukashenko’s dictatorships. His journey from a member of the oppressive regime to a fighter for freedom and democracy highlights the internal struggles faced by those who have served repressive governments and choose to make a stand for what they believe is right.
