Former Marine Paul Whelan spoke about his disappointment when he found out that WNBA star Brittney Griner was released from Russian detention but he was not. He was devastated upon hearing the news and realized that the U.S. had given up its negotiating position to secure Griner’s release. Despite feeling abandoned, Whelan maintained faith that the U.S. would eventually secure his release.
Whelan had been imprisoned in Russia for over five years before being released in August in a high-profile prisoner swap. During his time in prison, he sang the national anthem every morning to maintain his spirits. He recounted the harsh conditions in prison, including being pressed to confess to crimes he did not commit and surviving on poor quality food.
Whelan emphasized the need for strong diplomacy with leaders of “rogue nations” like Putin, stating that tough actions are necessary. He expressed skepticism about Trump’s claims regarding his relationship with Putin and the potential to secure prisoner releases. Whelan also shared his experience of hearing about the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny while in prison.
Despite his difficult experiences, Whelan expressed determination not to give in to despair and to continue fighting. He is now readjusting to life in the U.S., dealing with medical and dental issues, and considering his future job prospects. Whelan expressed gratitude towards those who helped him during his return to the U.S. and acknowledged the challenges he faces as he transitions back to regular life.
