Hurricane Oscar made landfall on the northern coast of east Cuba on Sunday evening with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph. The compact but powerful Category 1 storm prompted hurricane warnings for parts of Cuba and the Bahamas. After moving across eastern Cuba on Sunday night into Monday, Oscar is expected to accelerate northeastward across the central Bahamas on Tuesday. Cuba, already dealing with power outages, was bracing for impact with storm warnings and watches in effect. Eastern Cuba is expected to receive 5 to 10 inches of rainfall with some areas seeing up to 15 inches. The southeastern Bahamas can expect 3 to 8 inches of rain, while the Turks and Caicos may see 2 to 4 inches. Additionally, storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is expected along Cuba’s north shore, along with large and destructive waves near the coast. As Oscar moves north of Cuba late Monday, it could still be a tropical storm and impact the central Bahamas on Tuesday.
