5 million people under winter weather alerts as snowfall persists in northern states

Five million people are currently under winter weather alerts as snow and rain disrupt post-holiday travel in the Northeast. Lake effect snow warnings are in place for areas near Lake Erie, with warnings and advisories across Michigan, New York, and Syracuse. Heavy snowfall could cause hazardous conditions with 1 to 2 inches per hour expected. Temperatures are significantly below average in parts of the Plains, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic due to an Arctic blast.

At least 30 inches of snow has fallen in Erie, while a woman en route to a heart transplant operation had to be rescued after getting stranded on a snowy highway. State police have been busy assisting disabled vehicles and responding to collisions during the winter weather.

In the Southeast, a freeze warning is in place for northern Florida and southern Georgia, with temperatures in Tallahassee well below average. Record-breaking traveler numbers were reported over the Thanksgiving weekend, with 2.8 million people traveling on Saturday alone – one million more than in 2023. Lines of traffic at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport were long on Sunday, prompting many travelers to walk from toll booths to terminals. The airport advises customers to allow extra time for their trips as the holiday weekend comes to a close.
