More than 50% of Korean companies in Vietnam experience technology theft: KIET

A recent study conducted by the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET) revealed that over 50% of Korean companies operating in Vietnam have experienced technology theft by their employees. The survey of 335 firms operating in Vietnam showed that a significant proportion of these businesses have faced technology leaks and threats from various sources including foreign and Korean employees, rival companies, and others in the country. This marks a sharp increase from the previous year, where only 34.6% reported such incidents.

The study found that non-Korean employees were responsible for 28.3% of technology theft, followed by partner firms and rival companies at 22.1% each, and Korean employees at 20.4%. Different industry sectors also reported varying levels of technology theft, with automobile and component companies citing foreign employees as the main culprits, while semiconductor companies pointed to Korean workers.

The survey highlighted a lack of security in personnel and document management as the primary cause of technology leaks. The institute recommended that companies strengthen their security measures and called for government intervention to provide support in the form of technology protection guidelines, security system consulting services, and assistance in international legal disputes.

This study underscores the importance of implementing robust security measures to protect valuable technologies from theft, especially in foreign markets where the risk of technology leaks is higher. Companies are encouraged to take proactive steps to safeguard their intellectual property and seek government support in addressing cybersecurity challenges.
