NJ Transit announced on Monday that two major rail lines were suspended and others were facing delays of up to 60 minutes due to Amtrak overhead wire issues near Newark Penn Station. The North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor rail services were suspended in both directions, while Raritan Valley Line service into and out of Penn Station New York was affected. Eastbound Midtown Direct service was diverted to Hoboken. Rail tickets were being cross honored by PATH at Newark, Hoboken, and 33rd Street Station, as well as by private carrier buses.
This is not the first time NJ Transit has faced issues this year, with delays and suspensions often attributed to Amtrak wiring problems. In September, a spokesperson for the agency mentioned that many issues were related to Amtrak track maintenance and other issues. Amtrak has stated they are working with NJ Transit to provide more reliable service. Commuters are advised to check njtransit.com/abc for updates on the situation.
