Two possible contenders for New Jersey governor secure re-election to House • New Jersey Monitor

Two members of New Jersey’s House delegation secured new terms in Congress, setting the stage for their potential gubernatorial campaigns next year. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, from the 5th district, won a fifth term by defeating GOP challenger Mary Jo Guinchard. In the 11th district, Rep. Mikie Sherrill secured a fourth term after overcoming a challenge from Joseph Belnome.

Both Gottheimer and Sherrill are expected to join a growing field of Democratic candidates for the gubernatorial race in 2025, as Governor Phil Murphy is barred by statute from seeking a third term. They will be competing against Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, former state Sen. Steve Sweeney, and New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller.

Gottheimer and Sherrill have had successful tenures in Congress since 2016 and 2018 respectively, with Sherrill’s victory coming amid a blue wave that saw Democrats dominate in the state. The 5th and 11th districts saw significant changes in their political makeup after a new congressional map was approved in late 2021.

The wins for Gottheimer and Sherrill not only secure their positions in Congress but also set the stage for what promises to be a competitive and diverse Democratic primary race for the governorship in New Jersey next year.
