Former New Jersey Department of Corrections officer, Giuseppe Mandara, has pleaded guilty to assault charges for an incident in 2019 where he attacked a man at the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center, resulting in the victim’s death days later from a stroke. Mandara admitted he intended to cause significant bodily harm and his actions were excessive and unjustified.
Attorney General Matthew Platkin and New Jersey’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability emphasized the importance of holding those in power accountable for their actions and ensuring individuals in state custody are protected by the law.
Despite the victim’s death, a state grand jury did not pursue homicide charges in connection with the incident. Mandara has forfeited his public employment and is barred from any future public office or employment as part of a plea agreement.
Mandara’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 31, 2025, highlighting the consequences of abusing authority and the commitment to justice for those in state custody.
