Governor Phil Murphy and Acting Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer of New Jersey announced the award of over $42 million in federal grant funding to build and expand preschool facilities in 22 school districts in the state. This initiative is part of the Murphy Administration’s goal to provide universal high-quality preschool to New Jersey families. The funding will help increase access to early education opportunities, benefiting children and families in the state.
The grants are the second round of Universal Preschool Facilities Expansion Grant funding, with a total of $120 million allocated through the American Rescue Plan Act Coronavirus State Fiscal Recovery Fund. The first round provided over $74 million in preschool facilities funding. The awards were based on priorities such as increasing available preschool seats, enhancing preschool facilities, and expanding programs from half-day to full-day.
The goal is to make New Jersey the best place to raise a family and educate a child by investing in high-quality preschool programs. The funding will support the construction and renovation of facilities to accommodate more preschool students, bringing the state closer to achieving universal preschool access.
