Longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., announced that he is dropping his bid to remain the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee for the next two years and has endorsed Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who recently announced his challenge for the position. Nadler, 77, cited the importance of having strong leadership in providing oversight of the FBI and Justice Department during the incoming Trump administration. He expressed confidence in Raskin’s ability to lead the committee in the face of threats to democracy posed by Trump. Nadler has served on the Judiciary Committee since 2019 and has been in Congress since 1992. Despite not seeking the Ranking Member position, Nadler pledged to remain an active member of the committee and work to protect vulnerable communities and democratic ideals. The decision was first reported by The New York Times.
