U.S. News & World Report recently released a list of New Jersey’s best hospitals in maternity care, with 32 hospitals being designated as “high-performing.” These hospitals met high standards in caring for parents with uncomplicated pregnancies, showing lower rates of unexpected newborn complications, fewer C-sections, successful breastfeeding programs, and tracking outcomes by race and ethnicity. Maternal health is a significant concern in the U.S., especially with the recent increase in infant mortality rates. A March of Dimes report card revealed that nearly one out of 10 children in New Jersey were born prematurely last year, with disparities across different racial and ethnic groups. U.S. News also recognized hospitals serving communities with limited access to critical care as “Maternity Care Access Hospitals,” while also publishing measures of labor and delivery representation by race and ethnicity. Less than 40% of the “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care” had non-white patient populations comparable to their surrounding communities. The list of hospitals includes well-known names like Hackensack University Medical Center and Morristown Medical Center.
