Former elected official, lawyers, and medical bill company owner included on Biden’s clemency and pardon list

President Joe Biden commuted the federal sentences of close to 1,500 individuals and pardoned 39 people in a historic act of clemency. Many of the individuals had been convicted of non-violent crimes, some related to illegal drugs, and had already been released from prison under the CARES Act to reduce crowding due to the pandemic. Among those granted clemency were a former county commissioner convicted of corruption charges, a tax attorney involved in a massive tax fraud case, and the owner of a Medicare billing company charged with orchestrating a $26 million fraud scheme.

One of those individuals, Sherranda Janell Harris, who was convicted on federal drug charges, was pardoned by Biden. She had since turned her life around, working in finance and real estate, and was seen as a role model in her community. Other individuals who received clemency from Biden included a former Ohio county commissioner involved in a pay-to-play scheme, a young man from Alabama convicted of drug and gun charges, and a medical billing company owner from Michigan convicted of defrauding Medicare.

Additionally, Malcolm Hartzog had previously had his life sentence commuted by former President Barack Obama, Anthony Le was sentenced for drug and gun charges, and Paul Daugerdas was convicted of overseeing fraudulent tax shelters. Elaine Lovett, another recipient of clemency, was convicted of Medicare fraud, and Shaquan Hemingway was sentenced for drug and firearm trafficking. Biden’s clemency grants aimed to provide second chances to individuals who had completed their sentences and demonstrated rehabilitation.
