Foster care advocate disputes Rep. Nancy Mace’s claim of being ‘physically accosted’

Foster care advocate Elliott Hinkle is challenging Rep. Nancy Mace’s claim that she was “physically accosted” by James McIntyre at an event celebrating the Foster Care Independence Act. Hinkle, who witnessed the interaction, stated that McIntyre approached Mace after her speech to discuss the need for support for LGBTQ foster youth. Mace seemed to have a normal conversation with McIntyre before leaving with a staffer. Shortly after, Capitol Police arrived and arrested McIntyre. Mace later reported feeling pain in her arm and shoulder and refused medical help.

Lisa Dickson, another former foster youth, expressed disappointment in Mace’s actions, stating that Mace had claimed the event was a safe space, yet had an attendee arrested for simply shaking her hand and discussing trans rights. Mace later shared an image of her arm in a sling, claiming she was physically assaulted by a pro-trans man.

Mace introduced a measure to bar lawmakers and House employees from using single-sex facilities that do not correspond to their biological sex, citing the election of openly transgender Sarah McBride as the first transgender member of Congress. McIntyre was charged with assaulting a government official but pleaded not guilty. He was released with conditions to stay away from Mace. The incident has sparked controversy and criticism, particularly among advocates for LGBTQ foster youth.
