Investigation Initiated into Allegations of New Jersey State Police Slowing Down Traffic Stops

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has launched an investigation into allegations of a traffic stop slowdown by New Jersey State Police troopers in response to a critical state report about the disproportionate stopping of minority drivers. Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara has been hired to lead the probe to avoid a conflict of interest. The slowdown reportedly occurred from July 2023 to March 2024 and may have coincided with an increase in crashes and fatalities on the roadways. Racial profiling concerns have been raised by the NAACP, with calls for State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan to resign. Civil rights attorney Gregg Zeff highlighted the need for proper training and statistics to prevent these issues. The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind the alleged slowdown and address any misconduct. The state police have a history of racial profiling, dating back to a 1998 incident involving troopers Hogan and Kenna. Attorney General Matt Platkin is determined to prevent any future incidents of racial bias within the State Police.
