U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal has called for mysterious drones spotted in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region to be “shot down, if necessary,” as their ownership remains unclear. Concerns about the drones flying over sensitive areas such as airports and military bases have spread across Capitol Hill.
Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement officials have stated that the drones do not appear to pose a threat to public safety, but the lack of information on their ownership and purpose is of concern. The FBI is investigating the sightings and has asked for any videos or photos from residents.
The drones, which have been seen near military facilities and the golf course of former President Donald Trump, have raised worries about air safety. While drones are legal in New Jersey, they must adhere to FAA regulations, but some of the drones spotted were larger than typical recreational devices.
Various lawmakers, including Senator Cory Booker and U.S. Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have expressed frustration at the lack of transparency surrounding the drones and have called for more information to be released to the public.
