Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company, UnitedHealth Group confirmed. Mangione, 26, targeted Thompson as he walked to a hotel for a conference, potentially due to his frustrations over a painful back injury. Police found a gun, a silencer, and incriminating handwritten notes when Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania. The document mentioned “parasites” in the healthcare industry and targeted a CEO. Thompson was shot on a Manhattan sidewalk and the killing was deemed targeted. The gun used in the crime was a DIY “ghost gun” made from a 3-D printer. Mangione is currently fighting extradition to New York and is facing charges in Pennsylvania. He plans to plead not guilty to all charges. Additionally, there is no evidence that Mangione was ever a client of UnitedHealthcare, but his social media and writings indicate a possible grudge against the company. The investigation into Thompson’s murder is ongoing and Mangione will be brought back to New York to face charges of murder. The next hearing in the Pennsylvania case is scheduled for December 30th.
