Bill Spadea allegedly gained an unfair advantage from radio show, opponent alleges in governor’s race dispute • New Jersey Monitor

Attorneys representing Jack Ciattarelli, a gubernatorial candidate in New Jersey, have filed a complaint with the state’s campaign finance watchdog against rival Bill Spadea. The complaint argues that Spadea’s campaign has benefitted improperly from his morning radio show on New Jersey 101.5, violating contribution limits and other rules of the state’s public financing program for gubernatorial candidates. Ciattarelli’s campaign accuses the radio station’s owner, Townsquare Media, of providing a platform for Spadea to advance his campaign and attack opponents.

In response, Spadea’s campaign manager labeled the complaint as an attempt to derail Spadea’s candidacy out of fear. The complaint also raises concerns about coordinated expenditures and in-kind contributions made by the radio station to Spadea’s campaign. The Election Law Enforcement Commission is being urged to withhold matching funds from Spadea until the full extent of these contributions can be determined. This dispute adds another layer of tension to the already competitive Republican primary race for New Jersey’s gubernatorial seat.
