New Jersey Mayor Goes Over Rights with ICE

Mayor André Sayegh of Paterson held a press conference on Monday to address recent reports of ICE operations in the city. Sayegh expressed that no one should live in fear of going to work, school, or visiting the doctor. He mentioned receiving calls from concerned residents and reports of children skipping school due to fear.

Sayegh, along with the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, emphasized the importance of knowing and asserting one’s rights when encountering immigration authorities. They advised residents to ask for a warrant, refuse entry without a judicial warrant, remain silent, and carry a Know Your Rights card. The mayor also mentioned rumors of ICE activity in Paterson, which are still being investigated.

Nationwide, ICE reported 956 arrests on Sunday and more than 2,600 arrests since Trump took office. ICE has referred to recent actions, including in Paterson, as “enhanced targeted operations” to protect national security. Sayegh stated that he is awaiting confirmation on the reported ICE presence in the city and is working to provide more information to the public.
