Woman from ‘I Am A Killer’ on Netflix recants confession of strangling boyfriend during clemency hearing

Lindsay Haugen, who was featured in Netflix’s “I Am A Killer” series for the 2015 murder of her boyfriend, Robert Mast, asked a Montana parole board for clemency. In her confession on the show, she claimed she killed him out of love and an urge to kill. However, during the parole hearing, Haugen walked back those statements, saying they were made under coercion. She expressed remorse for the crime and asked for a shorter sentence, citing her improved behavior and treatment for alcohol addiction.

The detective who interrogated Haugen during the investigation also spoke at the hearing, claiming she made other callous confessions, including planning to bury Mast’s body in a remote area and not reporting the crime to the police. Mast’s family members emotionally pleaded with the board to keep Haugen behind bars, saying she exploited his murder for notoriety on the Netflix show.

The Montana Board of Pardons and Parole has 30 days to make a recommendation to Governor Greg Gianforte, who has the authority to grant or deny Haugen’s request for clemency. Without clemency, she would be eligible for parole in 2030. The board received both letters of support and opposition for her early release.

Clemency is a rare form of relief from a sentence and is not granted in most cases. The board members, who were unaware of the Netflix episode, decided to grant Haugen a public hearing due to sufficient cause. Governor Gianforte does not have a statutory timeline to respond to the board’s recommendation.
