Mountain Lion Spotted by New Jersey Resident in Backyard

Residents in New Jersey have been reporting sightings of mountain lions for years, with many eyewitnesses throughout the state claiming to have seen the elusive big cat. However, despite numerous stories, clear photographic evidence has been lacking. That is, until now.

A resident in Califon, Hunterdon County, recently captured a photo of what appears to be a cat-like animal in his backyard. The image, dated August 24, 2024, shows a creature with a tail that is not clearly visible, leading to speculation about its identity. Some believe it could be a mountain lion, while others argue it may be a bobcat.

This photograph stands as the most convincing evidence of a mountain lion in New Jersey to date, although further confirmation is needed. Other residents in Mahwah, Bergen County, have also reported sightings of a similar creature, reinforcing the possibility of these big cats roaming the Garden State.

More witnesses have come forward with their own encounters with mountain lions, sparking a debate about their presence in New Jersey. If you have seen a mountain lion or have any evidence, share your story with Joe Kelly at joe.kelly@townsquaremedia.com.
