OpenAI has partnered with the U.S. National Laboratories to provide its latest artificial intelligence models for scientific research and nuclear weapons security. The agreement will allow scientists at the National Laboratories to access OpenAI’s reasoning-focused models and deploy them on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The partnership aims to enhance cybersecurity, advance disease treatment, deepen understanding of mathematics and physics, and work on reducing the risk of nuclear war and securing nuclear materials worldwide. OpenAI researchers with security clearances will be involved in consulting on the project.
OpenAI recently released ChatGPT Gov, an AI platform designed specifically for U.S. government use, allowing government agencies to use sensitive information within their own secure hosting environments. Since the beginning of 2024, over 90,000 government employees have used OpenAI’s technology for tasks such as translation, document summarization, policy memos, code generation, and application development.
The move to strengthen ties with the government is seen as an effort to please President Donald Trump. OpenAI is also part of the Stargate project, which involves significant investment in U.S. AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, a Chinese AI startup, DeepSeek, has gained popularity in the U.S. with its powerful and cost-effective AI model, prompting Altman to acknowledge them as a competitor.
