A courtroom video captured the shocking moment when New Mexico murder suspect Alexander Ortiz was attacked by his alleged victim’s uncle and stepfather during a plea hearing. Ortiz, 21, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, Alianna Farfan, and charged with first-degree murder. The video shows the uncle and stepfather, identified as Carlos Lucero and Pete Ysasi, jumping over the courtroom boundary and attacking Ortiz, who tries to flee. A melee ensues, involving several individuals including a corrections officer and Ortiz’s father. The fight ends when the corrections officer uses a Taser to intervene.
Both Lucero and Ysasi were taken into custody and charged with battery on a peace officer and assault on a jail. They were later released from the Metropolitan Detention Center. Farfan was found dead in her apartment in January 2024, and police learned that she and Ortiz had an abusive relationship. Friends of Farfan reported hearing a single gunshot on the night of her death, and discovering her with a gunshot wound to the face. Ortiz was arrested after a brief stand-off with police in February 2024 and has been in custody since then.
The motive for the attack on Ortiz in the courtroom was likely related to the uncle and stepfather seeking retribution for Farfan’s death, as Lucero referred to her as his niece during the altercation. Ortiz has pled not guilty to the charges of murder, and his next court hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.
