New Jersey Election Petition Signature Requirements Officially Altered

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has signed a new law that changes the signature requirements for candidates to qualify for the ballot in state elections. The law, which went into effect on February 3, 2025, increases the number of petition signatures needed for candidates to be placed on primary, general, nonpartisan municipal, and school election ballots. The changes will impact candidates running for office in 2025.

Candidates seeking their party’s nomination for Governor must now submit a petition with at least 2,500 signatures, while candidates for the General Assembly must have at least 250 signatures. Independent candidates for Governor need 2,000 signatures, and General Assembly candidates need 250 signatures.

These changes apply to the 2025 primary and general elections. Candidates can use petition forms issued before January 2025 as long as they have the required number of signatures. The new law aims to ensure fair and accurate representation on the ballot.
