Honoring the Victors of the First-Ever Sony Women in Technology Award amidst the Beauty of Nature


Sony Group Corporation and Nature have announced the winners of the first Sony Women in Technology Award with Nature, recognizing outstanding early to mid-career women researchers in the field of technology. The three winners, Dr. Kiana Aran, Dr. Amanda Randles, and Dr. Yating Wan, along with Judges’ Commendation recipient Dr. Jiawen Li, were honored at an award ceremony in Tokyo.

Dr. Aran, a bioengineer, is pioneering the fusion of biology with electronics for precision medicine. Dr. Randles is being recognized for her work in “digital twin” technology for personalized insights into cardiovascular health. Dr. Wan is focusing on Silicon Photonics to integrate light sources on silicon chips for more energy-efficient data communication.

The judging panel highlighted the significant impacts that each of the winners is making in their respective fields and the potential for real-world applications from their research. A Judges’ Commendation was also given to Dr. Li for her innovative work in medical imaging.

The award aims to support more diverse gender representation in the international research community and inspire the next generation of women in STEM fields. Applications for the next cycle of the award open on March 6, 2025.
