Franklin County, Ill. Now Offering 911 Texting Services

Franklin County in Illinois has implemented a new technology called Next Generation 911, allowing 911 callers to connect with dispatchers in a new way, including texting instead of calling. This option is particularly helpful for individuals who are hearing impaired or unable to speak freely on the phone, such as in cases of domestic violence where victims may need to discreetly ask for help.

Dispatch Director Jason Knowles and 911 Director Amos Abbott have praised the new technology for its user-friendly interface and improved response times. By allowing victims to provide dispatchers access to their phones with a simple link, dispatchers can see the location, camera, and audio of the caller, which aids in collecting evidence and providing prompt assistance.

According to Abbott, the implementation of this technology has significantly reduced response times in Franklin County by 40-50 percent. Despite financial challenges, grant funding and support from vendors have made it possible for the county to bring this cutting-edge technology to its community.

Officials emphasize the importance of training dispatchers to use the new service efficiently, with online training available in less than a day. The goal of implementing this technology is to ensure that all residents and visitors in Franklin County have access to the latest tools and resources in times of emergency.
