Trump Announces Decision to Block Biden’s access to Classified Information

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he was cutting off former President Joe Biden’s access to intelligence information, stating that there was no need for Biden to continue receiving classified information. Trump said he was revoking Biden’s security clearances and halting his daily intelligence briefings. While presidents do not technically have security clearances, the intelligence community provides them with classified material. Former presidents are typically allowed to receive intelligence briefings if they are being consulted on events from their administration.

Biden’s office did not immediately respond to Trump’s announcement. Trump referenced comments made by Biden in 2021, where Biden suggested that Trump should not receive intelligence briefings due to his behavior. Trump also mentioned a report from former special counsel Robert Hur, who said Biden had a poor memory in a decision not to prosecute him for mishandling classified material.

In a separate move, Trump had previously revoked security clearances of 50 former intelligence officials, a decision that legal experts found unprecedented. Trump had been charged in June 2023 for mishandling classified material after leaving office but was later cleared of the charges. The Justice Department had moved to appeal the decision but dropped the appeal at the start of Trump’s second term, ending the case. Biden’s response to Trump’s actions remains to be seen as the situation continues to unfold.
