Trump promises to pardon Pete Rose posthumously

President Donald Trump announced on Friday his intention to pardon baseball legend Pete Rose, criticizing Major League Baseball for banning Rose from the sport’s hall of fame due to gambling. Rose, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 83, was banned for life for betting on games, though he never wagered against his own team. Trump defended Rose’s actions, stating that he only bet on his team winning and never acted against his own interests.

Trump took to Truth Social to make the announcement, highlighting Rose’s record-breaking achievements in baseball. He emphasized that Rose had the most hits in baseball history and had won more games than anyone in sports history. Despite Rose’s admission of gambling on games, Trump argued that he did not deserve to be permanently barred from the sport.

It is unclear what specific offenses the pardon will cover, as Rose was never convicted of a crime related to his gambling activities. In 2017, the Philadelphia Phillies canceled a ceremony to honor Rose following allegations of a sexual relationship with a girl before she turned 16. Rose maintained that she was of the age of consent at the time.

Rose, who played for the Cincinnati Reds for most of his career from 1963 to 1986, won three World Series and holds numerous records in Major League Baseball, including hits, games played, at-bats, singles, and outs.
