White House confirms FBI has returned Mar-a-Lago search records to Trump

The FBI returned boxes of documents seized from Donald Trump’s Florida property after he left office, which he claimed contained nothing classified. White House staff loaded the boxes onto Air Force One for transport to Florida. The White House said the FBI returned Trump’s property taken during unlawful raids. Counselor Alina Habba criticized the special counsel, Jack Smith, who initiated the investigation, calling it a “hoax.” The White House did not reveal the contents of the boxes but stated they contained Trump’s personal items that were unlawfully taken. The investigation led to charges against Trump in 2023, including retaining national defense information, making false statements, and obstruction of justice. The Justice Department dropped the case after Trump won the presidential election and a federal judge dismissed it due to violations of the law. The co-defendants in the case, Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, also had their cases dropped. Trump celebrated the return of the boxes, claiming justice had prevailed and that the investigation was merely an attack on a political opponent. The White House did not specify if any changes were made to storage protocol following the raid on Trump’s property. Trump maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
