TBWA\HAKUHODO and Nissan Motor have joined forces to launch ‘NISSAN ANIMALERT,’ an initiative aimed at achieving zero wildlife fatalities caused by vehicles. Inspired by electric vehicle pedestrian alert systems, ‘NISSAN ANIMALERT’ emits customised frequencies to deter animals from roads, reducing the risk of wildlife accidents. The pilot test will focus on protecting the endangered Amami rabbit, found only on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima islands. The project brings together industry, government, academia, and partners to prevent wildlife fatalities through innovative technology.
The project is based on Nissan’s EV pedestrian alert sound technology, adapted to alert wild animals and prevent accidents. With over 70,000 wildlife fatalities on national highways in Japan in 2022, protecting wildlife from vehicle accidents is urgent. The collaboration aims to address this critical issue, particularly in Amami Oshima, where incidents involving the endangered Amami rabbit have reached record highs.
Preliminary results from on-site trials in Amami Oshima showed immediate avoidance behavior from Amami rabbits when the device was activated. The project aims to use technology developed for pedestrian safety to protect animals, demonstrating Nissan’s commitment to reducing accidents and fatalities. The project’s tagline, “From sound that protects people to sound that protects animals,” highlights the application of Nissan’s technology and ideas to safeguard wildlife. Through collaboration with various stakeholders, the ‘NISSAN ANIMALERT’ initiative seeks to make a positive impact in preserving endangered species and addressing the coexistence of vehicles and wildlife.
