Anthony Knox Jr., a three-time New Jersey high school state wrestling champion and senior at St. John Vianney High School, has been charged with simple assault for his involvement in a brawl at Collingswood High School. Knox was seen punching someone in the bleachers during a wrestling tournament. He was initially disqualified from a championship but was later reinstated by a judge.
In a statement, Knox explained that he ran into the crowd to protect his father and mother, who were being harassed by fans. His father, a former MMA fighter, also stated that he was assaulted after confronting individuals who were yelling racial slurs at the wrestlers.
Both Knox Jr. and Sr. were taken into custody after the incident, with Knox Jr. facing charges for leaving the bench area during the brawl. The family has filed a lawsuit in response to the suspension from the athletic association.
St. John Vianney High School addressed the incident, expressing disappointment that the actions of adults have impacted young athletes. The school plans to use the event as a learning experience for its athletes and community.
Despite the charges and controversy, Knox Jr. went on to win the championship in his weight class at the NJSIAA Region 7 tournament and is preparing to compete for his fourth state title. He is also set to wrestle for Cornell University next year.
