Cottonwood Technology Fund secures €23M in initial funding for its fourth fund to support hard tech startups

Cottonwood Technology Fund has announced the successful first close of its fourth investment fund, Cottonwood Technology Fund IV, at $25M. This fund was backed by various investors including Caterpillar Ventures, The Merrion Oil & Gas Family, and Dutch regional investor NOM. General Partner Alain le Loux highlighted the need for seed stage capital in northwest Europe and the advantages of operating a venture capital fund across two continents.

The fund aims to raise a total of $80M to invest in early-stage B2B startups specializing in hardware technologies across deep-tech industries. Cottonwood’s focus is on the Southwest United States and Northwest Europe, seeking to address major global challenges by funding innovative technologies such as advanced materials, nanotechnology, and clean energy.

Since 2010, Cottonwood Technology Fund has been making impact investments in deep tech and hard science. The fund seeks opportunities at the Pre-Seed, Seed, and Early Stage levels, with investments ranging from €500,000 to €3M in the first funding round. The fund has previously invested in companies like Skorpios Technologies, Sarcos Robotics, and BayoTech.

Founder and managing partner Dave Blivin emphasized the importance of supporting hard tech startups, especially at the earliest stages, where traditional venture firms often fall short. Despite the longer growth and exit timelines for these companies, Cottonwood Technology Fund recognizes the potential for long-term disruptive impact and appreciates the patient support of their current investors.
