New Jersey Joins Forces with 7 Other States to Sue Trump Administration for Cuts to Teacher Training Funds

New Jersey, along with seven other states, is suing the Trump administration over the elimination of $600 million in teacher recruitment and preparation grants. These grants, from the Teacher Quality Partnership and Supporting Effective Educator Development programs, are aimed at addressing the shortage of K-12 teachers in high-need areas and subjects. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts, argues that cutting these programs will harm public education and communities nationwide.

State Attorney General Matt Platkin called the cuts an “unprecedented assault on public education” and emphasized the importance of building a pipeline of qualified teachers for the future. The lawsuit also challenges the legality of the cuts under the Administrative Procedure Act.

New Jersey schools like Montclair State University and The College of New Jersey have been impacted by the elimination of these grants, which have helped recruit and prepare teachers in urban and rural communities. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction to stop the cuts and ensure that schools have the resources needed to address teacher shortages and provide quality education to students.
