‘Project Extreme’ from NJ Advance Media receives prestigious national journalism award

NJ Advance Media was awarded the prestigious Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Political Reporting for their investigative series, “Project Extreme,” which delved into the rise of extremism in New Jersey. Led by Spencer Kent, the yearlong investigation highlighted the mainstreaming of hate in a state known for its moderate politics.

The series explored how far-right influencers gained traction in New Jersey, the prevalence of threats to public officials, and the divisive impact of ultra-right ideologies in local leadership. Judges praised the reporting as riveting, courageous, and a crucial exploration of the threats extremism poses to democracy.

Supported by a grant from the John Farmer Memorial Journalism Fund and featuring polling by Rutgers-Eagleton, “Project Extreme” was a collaborative effort involving journalists such as Brianna Kudisch, Matt Gray, and Matt Arco, as well as data reporter Riley Yates and editor Jeff Roberts. The work was commended for its fearless exposure of dark ideological corners and relentless pursuit of the truth.

NJ Advance Media previously won a Toner Prize in 2021 for their coverage of political reporting in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Vice President of Content Christopher Kelly expressed pride in the recognition and emphasized the importance of holding power accountable, shedding light on complex issues, and telling compelling stories through journalism.

The Toner Prize, named after the late New York Times journalist Robin Toner, will be officially presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., with a $5,000 prize. The series can be read online, covering topics such as hate recruitment, extremist influence in politics, and the impact of election violence in New Jersey.
