UPDATE: South Orange Homeowners’ Tax Payments Revealed


South Orange, NJ residents saw a 3.61 percent increase in property taxes last year, with the average homeowner paying $22,057. This is significantly higher than the state average of $10,095. The breakdown of property taxes in South Orange for 2024 showed that school taxes made up 57.2%, municipal taxes 28.1%, and county taxes 14.8%.

Experts point out that high property taxes do not necessarily mean homeowners are being ripped off, as they often benefit from the services provided. Property taxes in New Jersey have been steadily increasing over the past decade, regardless of the political party in power. Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, has seen a 15 percent increase in property taxes since taking office in 2018.

New Jerseyans continue to pay the highest property taxes in the nation. The state has allocated billions for property tax relief programs, including the upcoming Stay NJ program for eligible seniors. Other relief programs include the “Senior Freeze” for eligible senior citizens and disabled persons.
