South Korean Court Revokes Warrant for Impeached President Yoon

The presidential office welcomed the cancellation of detention for Yoon Suk-yeol, as the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials was deemed to have conducted an unlawful investigation. Yoon’s conservative People Power Party also supported the decision, calling it justice served. However, Yoon’s opponents are urging prosecutors to appeal the ruling, stating that it does not mean he is innocent of insurrection. Yoon, if released, will return to the presidential residence for his insurrection trial and to determine the uphold of his impeachment.

During the impeachment trial, Yoon stated that he used martial law to break political deadlock with the opposition-controlled legislature and denied ordering military commanders to remove lawmakers from parliament. A ruling from the Constitutional Court is expected soon. Prosecutors are also seeking to arrest members of the presidential security service who blocked the arrest warrant for Yoon, citing their duty to protect the president.

Additionally, a supporter of Yoon in his 80s set himself on fire in Seoul, carrying fliers with the slogan “Long Live President Yoon!” He was hospitalized in critical condition. The situation is being closely monitored by NBC News reporters based in Seoul and Hong Kong, with contributions from Arata Yamamoto.
